Who's that sleeping in my bed?

Now I'm a patient kitty and a very good hostess... but there are limits. It all started with my cousin, Sir Winston, coming to visit. During these visits I prefer to remain in the bedroom whilst he has the run of the house. However, today, after he returned home I quietly checked out my favorite hangouts, one of which, is my wonderful warmy soft bed.
Hmmm... something's not right. There's a strange feel to my bed; it's positioned differently; it has a strange scent. What could it be? And then it came to me... someone's been sleeping in my bed!!!
The other side of the story? Well, here it is.

Decorating for Christmas

We've just about finished decorating for Christmas and I thought I'd post a few photos. We seem to do the same thing each year but with minor alterations. First, the outdoor lights...An icy cubed-snowman happily welcomes visitors

The one thing we do change each year is the color of ornaments on our tree. Since we've collected ornaments for some 40+ years there's quite an assortment from which to choose. This year we decided to honor my alma mater, the University of Delaware, so all of the balls are blue and gold. Go Blue Hens!

Greetings everyone! I know it's been quite some time since you've received a post from Sweetbrier; I mean four months, really! It's not that I haven't tried to get my human to stop fiddling around and do just a simple post, but as usual, she won't listen to me. So here I am, waiting patiently for her to revisit blogland.I hope everyone had a good summer and that fall is going well too. So far the weather's been mild here but in preparation, my human got out my bed and I must say, I've been enjoying it. She thinks I'm the one who's lazy, but I referred her to Jules Renard's quote... "Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired."

Cassie's Concessions - Nature Watching

The one thing that all feral cats, especially those in captivity, have to do to survive is concede. I'm nine years old and have been captive for six. Sigh...

My human, although well-meaning, often tests my ability to concede. Her latest endeavor is the bird feeder. Since I sit on a stool in the kitchen window each day overlooking the patio and backyard, she decided that I needed entertainment. She placed a large bird feeder on a stool about eight feet from my window. What can I say... it gets visited, lots!
I'll get to the birds in a minute, but first I have to talk about the other meals, err, I mean, critters that come and visit, feasting on the birdseed that is thrown out by the birds (or spilled by my human). This is the rabbit and it's big, about my size.
Oooh, I'd love to get hold of that cotton tail.
My human names most of the critters that visit our backyard. The chipmunks are called Chip and Dale. Not sure which is which...
they both look alike...
and they both would probably taste the same:)
Now the birds. Ughh, what can I say. This is Mr and Mrs C and their offspring. Mrs C sits on top of the feeder watching for predators. Little does she know I'm sitting right here and if I ever escape, they're toast.

Now the fun part - baby birds! The only problem is, when you get close, you get nose-divided by their mom. Those Thrasher beaks can take an eye out!

I'm so tired of this father-child bonding.
Note to Kramer - be happy with the lizard. I know you probably get to see some birds too - just be happy that your human doesn't try and provide you with more entertainment.

Garage Sale Find

During good weather, my mum and I make a weekly excursion to neighborhood garage sales. Most times we come home empty handed, but every once in a while we find something nice. Now, pair that with my love of linens (OK, I also like china, crystal, books, jewelry...) and I feel really good at the end of the day.

Today, we came across a lady who had some doilies her grandmother had crocheted and of course I bought them all. Pictured below are three light yellow doilies.

A 24" square crocheted (?) scarf which will look terrific on a small table.

Mom's Backyard

Mother's backyard is beginning to bloom and I captured these shots this past weekend. She has a bed of white irises that are just 'bloomin' beautiful!
The wind was gusting but I managed to get some shots in between.
I love how the sun helps outline the petals with shadows.

Her crabapple tree is also blooming. The tree has been covered with white and pink blooms for the past week.

Antique Portraits

A couple of months ago, my mum and I attended the Dixie Fair at the North Atlanta Trade Center. It's a small antique fair but the quality of the vendors and their goods was outstanding. One lady had quite a collection of Civil War period artifacts and I fell in love with this pin. It appears to be a Civil War era soldier, probably Union, and the pin is in excellent condition with only some patina on the front left.
At the Lakewood 400 this past week, I purchased two more pins, probably around the turn-of-the century to maybe the 19-teens. This pin is of a lovely lady with a strand of pearls and some color has been added to her cheeks.

To say the least, I believe I've become hooked (no pun intended) on these gems. It's like wearing antique portraits when you pin them on.

Hints of Spring

It's still February but there are hints of spring in the air. Since I am dog-sitting, I have the opportunity to catch some of the sights in early morn. First, is the sunrise with it's rays lighting up the sky through the still barren branches of trees.

On one sunny morning, I was able to capture a lone bird sitting atop a tree peering over the quiet dawn.
Saturday morning I captured several shots of birds - first, just a beautiful cardinal...
then two more birds...
and a few moments later, many more. I wonder, was I watching them or were they watching me? As the numbers increased, I couldn't help but reflect on Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "The Birds."
Oops, what's this? A squirrel? Very unusual for our neighborhood since we have few tall trees.
My rose bush is beginning to get its leaves.
And the hydrangea is peeking out...

Aaahhh spring... but as you and I well know, old man winter may once again raise his relentless head.

Georgia Snow 2011 - Update!

Yes, once more nature has graced us with a wonderful blanket of snow. As beautiful as it is now, we are expecting freezing rain during the day which could change the landscape, literally. Our junipers and trees are of concern as the weight of snow and ice could bring them down.

The city has pretty much shut down and we are staying inside today, well, except for an occasional excursion outside for photography. It's lunchtime and treacherous out there so this will be my last post of the day.

This morning we thought we had only gotten 3" (measured on the back patio) but it measures 6" out front. These were taken around noon.
Neighborhood children (and adults) are playing a southern form of hockey at the end of our icy cul-de-sac but I decided not to traipse down there - too treacherous!

Snow piled up against one of our water birch trees and provides a great backdrop for the curly pink bark.
The snow came through the screen on the porch and covered some watering cans.
And an artificial tree.
Since I couldn't get out the back screen porch door due to the snow drift, I walked around the side of the house. I was able to get the gate open enough to squeeze through...

The holly bushes in the back have a nice fluffy blanket...

Of course, no snow should be without a snow angel, but due to the sheet of ice that covered the snow, any movement was nearly impossible.
9:00am ish

We seem to have only received 3" of snow, but a lot of North Georgia has up to 7" (probably more in the mountains). I could only get the back porch door open a few inches due to a snow drift against it, so I stuck my arm out took the following pics early this morning.

A White Christmas, in the South!!!

It snowed Christmas Day, the first time since 1882! Of course, we only got a smattering but it was still beautiful.

Although we were overjoyed with the snow, it made it rough for family members traveling. Our granddawgs, however, made the best of it. Lizzie snuggles against Kim, and then,

She too found the snow beautiful (except when she had to go out in it)

Calvin (the philosopher) found comfort amongst some blankets

Kasey preferred the indoor activities, especially being scratched... a little to the right please.
Hmmm.... what is so interesting in the kitchen? Do I get up?
Treats maybe?
Kramer remained in the shadows most of the time, working on his next post for the Victorian Parlor. He prowled, climbed, perched and growled and then sought shelter in the bedroom. I'm sure he took plenty of notes!

The fight that never was

Having heard a loud guttural yell, I rushed to the kitchen to find my Cassie kitty perched on the stool in the window nose-to-nose with my neighbor's white cat. By the time I retrieved my camera, both had retreated.
Cassie continues to watch the intruder.
But eventually both cats tire of the confrontation.
As I walk away, I hear a commotion and turn to see Cassie lunging at the cat against the window. After a few loud thumps and realizing that glass and screen separate the two, the other cat retreated and jumped over the fence.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Decorating our home for Christmas has always been a challenge. I don't have the decorating talents of the Victorian Parlor, so I just do what makes me happy!

The guys are posed to greet you in the foyer! Junior is counting the days until Christmas...
Over the years I have collected a lot of stuffed Santas, snowmen and reindeer and my challenge is to find a place where they can sit and observe. I can't put them on chairs or the floor due to a certain puppy who might just convert them into chew toys (yes Liz, I'm talking about you:)

So, for this year, they are perched on top of the china cabinet in the dining room.
These guys will be moved when Liz arrives

Lakewood 400 - November 2010

Back in May I did a post on one of the most outstanding booths I have visited at any antique fair. I like it because you feel like you've walked into a real boutique! The hostess is Carlotta Stapleton and not only is she a wonderfully gracious person but she has an outstanding memory, remembering your interests and what you have looked at in her booth from previous visits.The next few shots are of vignettes she has set up...

She has clothing dating back to the Victorian period...
And as recent as the mid-20th century.
Glass and mirrored trays which catch the light are placed throughout
Hats anyone? This is one of the Victorian Parlor's favorite past times.

A step back in time...

St. Augustine, founded in the 1565, is one of the most historical and enjoyable places to visit - again and again! Below are some of the photos I took on our recent day trip.

Where should we start? Why not the Old Spanish Trail Zero Milestone for St. Augustine to San Diego, CA!

History is certainly well established in cemeteries. I was able to snap a few pics from outside the wall.

Most of the headstones were in the 1800's, but I remember some years back of seeing a small cemetery that I believe dated back to the seventeenth century.

Along with the old is the new...

Once you get into Old St. Augustine, you can walk down St. George Street (for pedestrians only) where you can visit the shops and restaurants. The side streets allow vehicles.

We stopped for lunch at the Columbia Restaurant. These beautiful tiles greet you as you enter the main eating area

An interesting parking meter! You put money in the meter and it gives you a card that you place on your dashboard. Not a bad idea if you park close enough and don't have to walk far, but then St. Augustine is all about walking!

Vacation at the Beach

Jacksonville, FL is a great place for a vacation! There are so many things to do - St. Augustine and Amelia Island are great one-day trips less than an hour away, there are wonderful restaurants and of course there is the ocean which is only ten minutes away! My sister and I spent one morning traversing the beach at low tide.

Ships of all types and sizes are constantly on the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.
A beautiful morning awaits us and we're heading for the peer...
The ocean provides many photo ops...
A little erosion, which will change and have a totally different look in another 24-hours
I love the patterns found in the sand...

Especially when the sun strikes it in just the right way...

And of course, what would a beach excursion be without shells.

On my recent trip to Jacksonville, I walked through my sister's neighborhood to take some pictures of their Halloween decorations.

A vulture sits on a bench waiting for the tricker treaters. What's that he's sitting on - a skull?

This yard will be especially appealing to children with its larger than life Halloween decorations. A giant spider awaits...

A new cat in town!

Move over boys, there's a new cat in town! This is Max, my sister's cat. About two years ago, my great niece rescued Max from certain death. He was dodging in between moving cars in a busy parking lot and she scooped him up and took him to my sister who adopted him. He was so tiny and they thought him only six weeks old but he turned out to be four months. Tough beginning, but nearly two years later he weighs in at 16 pounds! He's all boy and keeps my sister hopping.Max is a tuxedo cat, nearly all black but with white paws, chest and tummy. It was difficult photographing him since most times the black just all merged together.
Max loves to play and I mean LOVES to play. If he can't find a toy, he'll entertain himself with whatever is available.

Yes, I'm dangling a toy and snapping a pic at the same time.
Max is beautiful against anything red...

Hmmm, red rug - spelled backwards, that's gurder. Oops, sorry that was red rum, wasn't it... flashbacks to the Shining.
My sister has stools at most windows and he loves to lay on them and watch people passing by or the occasional lizard or bird.
Max eyes something there...
"Oooh, what's that? Kids going to school on bicycles..."
The back of the house backs up to marshland and Max enjoys the serenity.
Max has many places to perch. Here he is on the bar between the kitchen and family room.
"Well, what are you waiting for... take the picture!"
"Hmmm, where did I leave that blue ball..."
Not the same, but this ball never gets lost.
"Ummm, dried flowers, how tasty!"
My sister likes jigsaw puzzles, but quickly found that Max likes to play with the pieces too. She keeps it covered and of course Max takes that as an invitation.
One of the most amazing things that I saw Max do was to chase his tail. The Victorian Parlor states that their cat, Kramer, is actually a dog, so maybe there's some truth in that...
He did finally catch it but the picture was too blurry to post...
Finally, at the end of the day, there's nothing like relaxing in a comfy chair.

October Vacation

I just got back from the most wonderful vacation visiting my sister in Jacksonville, FL. We had a great time and she was so patient with my stopping every few minutes to snap a picture. But once you become a blogger, you never go anywhere without your camera, so whoever you're with has to put up with your obsessiveness:)

I have enough photos to do several posts, which I will try and get to over the next month. I know everyone in blogland will be tired of hearing about my trip but I must share.

On Tuesday, we went to St. Augustine (a later post) and visited the Lightner Museum. This is a must-see for anyone interested in Victoriana. Mr. Lightner purchased the Alcazar Hotel (built in 1887) in 1946 and moved his extensive Victoriana collection to it in 1948. Sadly he died in 1950, but willed the building and its contents to the people of St. Augustine.

A koi pond is located in the main courtyard and a bridge crosses it.

What a great time I had snapping pictures of the fish. I especially liked the designs the fish made while swimming in the water...

Believe it or not this fish kept lifting its head out of water. We were concerned for its welfare...
So were the other fish... or perhaps they were in a shark frenzy (we hope not!)

Yes, Cassie, today is day 4 of having no phone. AT&T say they're working on an area outage and it should only take a few more days. Can you believe it? A whole week without a phone.

I took an inventory of Sweetbrier's phones. Got a couple of cordless ones - they're wonderful for when you want to walk around the house unencumbered.
The old wall phone is great for when the electricity goes out. You can still call out which you can't do with the cordless ones.
Remember the rotary dial? It's fun as long as you're not in a hurry:) Of course the receiver is a bit on the heavy side. Haven't we gotten lazy!!!
Thank heaven for cell phones!!!

Update: An hour after I posted this, my phone called me and said it was now working. If I'd known all I had to do was post on my blog to get it fixed I would have done that Monday. Have a good weekend!

New Member of the Family

This is the newest member of my daughter's family, a Eurasier puppy called Sasha. Isn't she beautiful! My daughter's husband did a lot of research before deciding on the breed. She likes to sit on the hearth probably because the stone is cool.
Sir Winston has welcomed her with open paws! He is five years and she is 10 weeks but she weighs a pound more. It's fun to watch them chase each other around and around.

Life's Blessings - Dogwood Trees

Our dogwood has gotten its fall berries. I love their shape and colors. They almost look like something out of a science fiction movie. I watched the other day as my resident chipmunk set out to feast on the berries that had fallen to the ground. He was followed by the birds who also seem to enjoy the feast. Nothing is wasted. In a few short weeks all evidence will have disappeared.

Of course next spring the tree will be in full bloom and once more we'll be able to sit and watch it in all its glory.

A study on clouds

For several days I took pictures of clouds. I've always loved clouds especially as a child when we'd lay on the ground and try and figure out their shapes. Oh to be young again. Anyway, there is a Cloud Appreciation Society and they have a website if you're interested.

I especially like clouds when the sun is rising or setting but it's difficult to get the shots from my backyard.

The wispy white clouds against the deep blue sky gives you a warm feeling (or is it our 90 degree plus temperatures?)
I liked the shapes here. It almost looks like brush strokes.

I was sitting on the back porch this morning with a cup of tea as the sun was coming up. Of course as soon as its piercing rays emanated through my wind chimes I ran inside and retrieved my camera. (You would have thought I'd been prepared). Anyway, the sun was casting wonderful shadows as it rose and I decided to follow it.

It's midsummer and very hot outside, mostly in the 90's, except when we get an afternoon thunderstorm. Then the outdoors becomes a sauna!

We're in the pink! A picture of Sweetbrier's backyard. We have a total of seven crepe myrtle trees, and you guessed it, they're all pink.
Note the dewdrops on the leaves of this crepe myrtle bloom...

The Victorian Parlor's hubby made this birdhouse for me many years ago. Although badly weathered and no longer occupied, I continue to smile when I see it. I think the vines are holding it together though.

Truffle Hunting

Sir Winston came to stay with us for the week while his family goes on vacation. He is such a sweet boy and has really mellowed. The only time he becomes excitable is when you take out the camera, so I had to sneak pictures of him.

One of his favorite pastimes is truffle-hunting, although we have no truffles of which I am aware. Here is our royal guest waiting patiently to begin the hunt.First he surveys the grounds

Finally his momma comes to pick him up and he relaxes on her lap. Some things are so much better than finding truffles.

A final good-bye pant to grandma as Winston is buckled into his car seat. He knows full well that the hunt will continue the next time he visits!

Back Yard Potential

Faith Cottage in Beaufort, SC has a very small yard but it has huge potential. This post will focus on the outside as it is now, you might say the "before" pictures.

The yard is small but has great possibilities especially since Hubby is a master gardener.
Faith Cottage is surrounded by a 3-foot high white picket fence and three gates. The front gate casts a shadow on the entry walk.

Calvin and Kasey are free to roam the yard but Lizzie needs to be kept on a leash. She could clear the fence in a flash!

The former resident decided to put down an oyster shell walkway but only got through half of the project. The shells are coming up, I'm told.

Ouch! You definitely can't walk on these in your bare feet.

Walking the pups, or...

Calvin's chagrin. Now that Kim and Hubby live in the city, they walk their pups around the block sometimes all at once and sometimes individually. On this particular day, I remained indoors while Kim walked each dog - first Lizzie, then Calvin, and finally the very patient Kasey. (Please note, these photos are in sequential order.)

While Lizzie was being walked, Calvin waited nervously
listening for sounds of footsteps of Kim coming home. Perhaps there?

Calivn returned and it was now Kasey's turn. Mind you, each walk around the block takes maybe five minutes. Calvin whines the entire time and is close to a nervous breakdown.

Faith Cottage

The Victorian Parlor has moved into an 1890 Victorian cottage, which has been named "Faith Cottage." Following are some photos of a work in progress as Kim and Hubby continue what seems to be a never-ending move:) A few architectural pieces were added as well. The improvements they have made are more in line with the period of the house.

The front door and its surround are all original. The VP added the light fixture and intends on putting a second one on the other side.

Hubby and a friend added crown moulding to the living room and bathrooms after Kim and her friend painted. The former owners had large contemporary furniture in this room and now it is filled with antiques. Hubby also moved all of their antique lighting fixtures over to the new house. Note the chandelier in the photo below. Also note the placement of the sofa as it is important to the post I will do later this week.

The living room has three windows (excluding the door) and the lace curtains allow just the right amount of light in.

The sofa and chairs make a beautiful and cozy seating arrangement.

This piece is elegant against the wall.

The house had no fireplace, so the VP created her own, with an additional chair on each side. I can't wait to see what she does to it at Christmas.

The mirror over the fireplace reflects the beauty of the room, especially the windows.
The floors are Brazilian cherry.
An authentic Victorian architectural surround added by the VP forms an elegant entrance to the master bedroom.
As you enter the master bedroom, you are greeted by their beautiful wood bed. Who's that? Hubby working on his laptop. Yes, the house is 120 years old, but we still need our technology, don't we...

I believe this is one of the windows in the master bedroom, taken early in the morning.
The VP's new home does not have a dining room, but a large eat-in kitchen. Kim moved her crystal chandelier from the library of her former home into the kitchen. The lights and crystals are reflected on the ceiling.

The guest bedroom is at the back of the house and is quite private and comfortable.

An Eclectic Neighborhood

This week we visited the new "old" home of the Victorian Parlor. As usual I took hundreds of pictures and will post them over the next couple of weeks. Kim and Hubby have moved to downtown Beaufort into a 1890's Victorian cottage which she has aptly named Faith Cottage. It is a beautiful home and we were fortunate to be able to experience 'city' life.

Please follow us on a walking tour of the VP's new neighborhood, a very eclectic mix of homes. The only thing common to them all was that of all the neighbors we met (and we met a bunch of them) each was warm and friendly.

Uses

This house is for sale! Although built only eight years ago, the facade fits in well with the neighborhood.

This house is empty and for sale if I remember correctly. Some minor repairs and it'll be good to go.

Beaufort still has empty lots for sale. There are two here with the most beautiful trees, only $95K each.
I was able to peek into this old abandoned home. Looked to be late 1800's, maybe a little earlier. I sure hope it will go on the market so that it can be saved in time.
There are many small churches and community centers dotting the city landscape.
A couple of blocks away we passed a very old building. The wood, although dark from aging, was in remarkably good condition (maybe cyprus?) as well as the foundation. It looks like an old store but might have been a duplex. Hopefully it too will be saved.
Finally returning to Kim's block, this is the home directly across the street from Faith Cottage. The house has been turned into apartments but you would never know it.
Catty-cornered from Kim is this lovely large old home. It's for sale too at an incredibly reasonable price. It had been vacant for some time but we met the people who just leased it. They were moving in while we were there and it turned out be friends of Kim and Hubby's. What a small world!
Behind Kim is a small cottage that was the former kitchen for Faith Cottage. The lovely lady who lives here renovated it and it is now a beautiful home with an open floor plan and cathedral ceilings and wooden beams. She has a grey African parrot that sits on the front porch and welcomes people!
We've now come full circle and returned to Faith Cottage. The city services are amazing! In the few short days we were visiting, the streets were cleaned and the weeds in the sidewalks sprayed. One of my favorite features was that the postman walks from house to house!
Please note, the Victorian Parlor is without Internet access, so it may be a week or two before she returns to posting, but I'm sure she will have many posts to make.

Gardens of Beaufort

I followed this butterfly around while he was feasting and he seemed very amenable to having his picture taken. I believe he is some sort of Skipper but there are so many types and after looking at about thirty photos I could not figure out which one he was. If anyone knows, please comment.

Patience

Have you ever heard the phrase 'patience is a virtue'? Patience is important in everyday life and is required with almost anything or anyone - children, jobs, diets, basically life in general.

Before my dad died in 1999, he gave me a small hydrangea bush from his yard. I planted it in my backyard and each year it grew but only produced one or two small blooms. I would drive around and see beautiful huge blooms on hydrangea bushes and wonder why my hydrangea barely survived. It seemed to have the right amount of sun and the right amount of shade and was in well-drained soil. Little did I know that the only ingredient missing was patience.

This year, my hydrangea has really surprised me.

I know the acidity in the soil determines the color. I love the pink and blue blooms next to each other...

The blue and cream are especially attractive

And what's this peeking from inside some low lying leaves next to the bush?
Whether this is a one-time occurrence, only time will tell. Perhaps my hydrangea bloomed because of all the rain we had last year, or perhaps the snow we had. Or perhaps it just needed patience. Whatever the reason, we are enjoying its beauty tremendously!

Fences of Beaufort

For the past few weeks we've been strolling through Beaufort's Old Point where gates, trees and gardens abound. The subject of this post is fences.

We begin our walk by descending ivy-covered steps.
Fences come in all shapes and materials...

Brick with a lattice design is common. I especially like it when homeowners place objects atop the walls.
A combination of wrought iron and brick...
Does the fence surround the garden or the garden the fence?
Another brick fence but its post is covered in some form of stucco, maybe a coquina?
Flowers and bushes continually peek through
I love the parallel between the house veranda and the fence
Some houses have walls for fences, but blooming plants continue to accent them

This was one of my favorites. I'm not sure what this type of fencing is called, but I remember it from the, uh-hem, 1950's? Anyway, notice how the bark from a bush or vine has been woven in and out of it...

These appear to be older bricks due to the curvature of their corners. I can't help but wonder, is the wall supporting the plants or the plants the wall?

Ft. Daniel 2nd Annual Frontier Faire

This past weekend the Fort Daniel Foundation in conjunction with the Gwinnett Archaeological Research Society, a chapter of the Society for Georgia Archaeology, celebrated their 2nd Annual Frontier Faire at the Ft. Daniel site situated on Hog Mountain. The Faire was a two-day event and consisted of demonstrations of life in the late 1790's and early 1800's as well as an active dig. Please click on the Fort Daniel Foundation link and learn more about the efforts underway to save this historic site, former home of two forts.

At the welcoming table, you could sign in (on real parchment) and get a brief explanation of the day's events as well as an invitation to join!
This Faire is in conjunction with Georgia's Archaeology month, the theme this year, "Making the Past Come to Life!"
Since Ft. Daniel has an active dig, a museum was erected to display the artifacts already discovered
Plus information on the timeline and history of the site
Demonstrations were key throughout the day and enjoyed by all!
A traveling merchant explained his wares and how they were used as well as where common phrases of today originated (i.e., pieces of eight, going off half cocked)

The Trees of Beaufort

The photographic tour of my trip to Beaufort, SC continues. This post is on the beautiful tress of the low country especially the oaks and palms.

Palm trees are magnificent sculptures and provide intriguing shapes against the background of the blue sky
or marsh. (I am assuming the photo below is of a future palm tree of some type:)
The textures of the bark are especially interesting, some smooth
some whittled
Large stately trees dot the landscape and adorn the streets and yards throughout the islands...

Moss drapes from many of the trees
with a rich and elegant flare
Tree shapes can be especially interesting in this low country town
Branches extend in all directions
and twist and turn
Bark shows evidence of past events giving this tree an interesting character
My favorite is this beautifully shaped reminder of times past. You can almost hear the laughter of children as they climb over and under its branches.

A Great Weekend in Beaufort!

The Victorian Parlor's hubby played Snoopy in the musical, Your a Good Man Charlie Brown, performed at the USCB Performing Arts Center this past weekend. I was fortunate to be able to make the trip to attend. The cast was phenomenal, in singing ability and acting. They really looked the part and it brought back many wonderful memories of the Peanuts characters. Kim's hubby was exceptional as Snoopy, with his beautiful singing voice and dog-like antics. The audience loved him and we were all so proud!

In the second act, he performed another solo called "Suppertime" (note the mailbox, brick wall on which Charlie and others would lean, and the big dog dish). The props were amazing! I'm sure the Victorian Parlor will share her photos of Schroeder's piano and Lucy's 'the doctor is in' booth.

Staying at the Terra Cottage is a wonderful Low-country experience. We had breakfast on the back patio where you have a view of the beautiful gardens. Roses adorned the table.
Hot tea and a delicious concoction of cheese on an herbal peta bread...
Of course, the canine residents were also enjoying the morning. Lizzie's checking out a squirrel.

And last but not least, Kramer (and yes, Mike, this time I included your other Granddog:) Kramer is not a happy camper, being relegated to the indoors!

Kim and I spent the weekend photographing just about everything in sight. She is an amazing photographer, of whom I am attempting to emulate. Here she is trying to catch the light across the marsh as the sun begins its descent.
As we approached the swing bridge, I was hoping it would be open so that I could take advantage and shoot some pictures. Usually you don't want to be delayed by the bridge, but with camera in hand, I was hoping... We got lucky!

Many people were out on the water with all sorts of boats.

The Beaufort area has amazing waterways and marshes. Several of the following shots were taken from the Old Point.

In the middle of the park was a fountain (I only wish it had been working)

The Chucta's (director, choreographer, set designer and other production roles for the musical) were kind enough to invite me to the cast party Sunday evening. Their home has a gorgeous view of the marsh providing Kim and me with additional ops to photograph Beaufort's beautiful land and waterscapes. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. C for a wonderful time!

Archaeology Month!

May is archaeology month in Georgia. During this time the Society for Georgia Archaeology and associated chapters across the state promote awareness through events, demonstrations and exhibits. In conjunction with these efforts, posters and information are sent to schools across the state. Below is this year's poster.SGA members were recruited to assist in stuffing and labeling several hundred tubes with posters and documentation. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History provided space for us to work and I took advantage of the opportunity to take a few photos.

The museum is a beautiful building in Atlanta, Georgia on Clifton Road. (My apologies for not getting specific names for the exhibits)

Evans Fine Foods in Decatur, Georgia is an old-fashioned restaurant and a great place to have a quiet lunch with good friends. Upon entering, one of my friends asked "where should we sit?" I replied, "a booth" and of course when you survey the restaurant, you quickly realize that is the only seating available. (I love booths, much cozier than hard chairs.)
So, with camera in hand, I began taking pictures. First is Phillip who is quite excited about his new position with a local university.
Joe, our good friend and a great listener, is also a happy camper with a relatively new position (six months) at a local institution of higher education.
Chandra, who is shy with a camera, tried to outdo me, but I caught a glimpse of her. This picture could also be titled, 'Check out my watch!'
Chandra's good news is her new event planning business. Actually she's been doing this for years, but now she is expanding to cover not only the Atlanta area, but the Bahamas and Trinidad! Chandra planned my retirement party a couple of years ago and it was phenomenal!

This morning while I was eating breakfast I noticed a pair of green eyes peeking from under the table and behind a plant I had set on the table. Of course I grabbed my camera and began taking pictures
I was amazed at how our Cassie's eyes matched the colors of the leaves so well
Of course, she was camera shy as usual
She snuck backwards further behind the plant, thinking she was out of sight
Finally, though, she acquiesced...
And the best way, to get out of the picture, you ask? Turn away from the camera!
